Chain wear shows up as elongation long before a link breaks, and the sprocket set pays for it. A chain run dry stretches and hooks the sprocket teeth.

Spray the inner run with the wheel turning so the carrier reaches the rollers rather than the side plates, let it flash, then wipe the excess before it flings. The water-resistant film is what carries over between applications. In plant use the same can covers conveyor chain where a grease gun cannot reach.

What it does not do is undo wear. Elongation is permanent, so a chain past the manufacturer wear limit gets replaced rather than relubricated. On sealed-ring chains the grease sits behind the rings; the spray reaches the rollers and side plates, not the pin inside. Hinges and gate hardware that want a heavier film are the job of lithium grease spray.
